Michel Franco’s poignant drama Memory made quite a splash when it premiered in Venice this year, and its theatrical release date is just around the corner. The first trailer stars Jessica Chastain and Peter Sarsgaard as two damaged individuals trying to escape their past.

Memory centers on a social worker Sylvia, whose simple and structured life is blown open when Saul follows her home from their high school reunion. Their encounter opens the door to their past and profoundly impacts both of their lives.

With Memory, writer/director Michel Franco wanted to tell a story about people trying to escape from the shadows of their past and build a life in the present.

“I wanted to make a film about people who for whatever reason fall through the cracks of society. Their inability—or unwillingness—to conform to expectations is often rooted in events that only exist in their memories,” said Franco in a statement.

In addition to Chastain and Sarsgaard, this film also stars Brooke Timber, Merritt Wever, Elsie Fisher, Jessica Harper, and Josh Charles. It had its world premiere at the Venice Film Festival, where Sarsgaard won the Volpi Cup for best actor. It will be released in selected theaters on December 22 before going wide on January 5, 2024.
