We may not have seen the last of Arthur Fleck.

Joaquin Phoenix earned an Academy Award and more than one standing ovation for his portrayal of a man whose failed career as a clown and stand-up comedian pushes him to breaking point in Joker.

The film went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time, garnering more than $1 billion at the global box office. Both audiences and critics praised the psychological thriller for its dark twist on the infamous DC character whose back story had not previously been explored.

Rumors of a sequel to the Oscar-winning flick have always existed, but Phoenix has now offered more weight to the possibility.

“This is an interesting guy,” the Her actor said of The Joker. “There are some things we could do with this guy and could [explore] further.”

While there has undoubtedly been thought put into another film, Phoenix added, “But as to whether we actually will? I don’t know.”

According to The Hollywood Reporter, director Todd Phillips is definitely pursuing a follow-up to the motion picture, with work on the script reportedly underway.
