Denzel Washington has given us one of his best films of the 2010s with The Book of Eli, and this story will soon continue. A prequel series inspired by this hit post-apocalyptic action film is in development, and it will be led and executive produced by John Boyega.

The original 2010 film was directed by the Hughes Brothers, and it revolved around a resilient drifter Eli, fighting his way across a ravaged, post-apocalyptic America while trying to deliver a sacred book that holds the secrets to humanity’s salvation to a safe location.

The film’s writer Gary Whitta would serve as creator, writer, and executive producer of the potential series, while its directors the Hughes Brothers would come on board as executive producers. They’d be joined by John Boyega, who’d also replace Washington in the lead role.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but Deadline reports that the prequel series would most likely take place 30 years prior to the events depicted in the film, and it would most likely explore the nuclear catastrophe that led to the collapse of Eli’s world.

Alcon Entertainment will be taking this hot package to select premium buyers, and they’ll most likely sell it pretty soon given its star-driven nature.
