Birds Of Prey director Cathy Yan is finally plotting her next project, and she found the perfect actor for the lead role. John Boyega will lead the cast of Yan’s sci-fi romance The Freshening.

The Freshening is based on Rachel Khong’s short story, originally published in the Paris Review, taking place in the near future where tensions over race and gender have reached a violet extreme.

To put a stop to it, the U.S. government creates an initiative called “the freshening”, forcing everyone to see others as the same race and gender as themselves. It all goes upside down when a new street drug emerges, allowing people to see the world for what it truly is.

Yan is producing the film alongside FilmNation Entertainment, Ali Wong, Ash Sarohia, Hyperobject Industries’ Adam McKay, and Betsy Koch and she’s thrilled to see Boyega joining them for this wild ride.

“It’s a dream to work with John Boyega, a singular talent whose commitment to his craft and willingness to take risks have delivered such memorable, wide-ranging performances. I know he’ll bring incredible depth and nuance to Reese,” said Yan in a statement.

Boyega is fresh from the success of The Woman King, and we’ll soon get to see him in the sci-fi comedy They Cloned Tyrone, also starring Teyonah Parris, Kiefer Sutherland, and Jamie Foxx.
