John Krasinski gave us one of the scariest horrors in recent years with A Quiet Place, but his next project as a director will see him exploring a completely different genre. The first trailer for his upcoming fantasy movie IF is here, and it imagines a world where imaginary friends are no longer invisible.

Cailey Fleming stars as Bea, a young girl who can see other people’s imaginary friends after they’ve been long forgotten and left behind. He finds a kindred soul in the Man Upstairs (Ryan Reynolds) after learning he has the same ability.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Krasinski revealed he started working on IF because he wanted to make a film his children could watch. He went to his producing partner, Allyson Seeger, with an idea for a story where imaginary friends are not just adorable creatures, but time capsules for everyone’s hopes, dreams, and ambitions.

In addition to directing and writing this film, Krasinski will also play one of the key roles alongside Fleming, Reynolds, Fiona Shaw, Alan Kim, and Liza Colón-Zayas, plus Phoebe Waller-Bridge, Louis Gossett Jr., and Steve Carell in voice roles.

IF will be released on May 17, 2024, by Paramount Pictures.
