Only 15 people to this date managed to win an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony awards – and John Legend just became one of them. He reached the coveted EGOT status after collecting an Emmy for Jesus Christ Superstar Live in Concert.

Legend wasn’t the only one to cross to the EGOT side of the road thanks to the NBC’s musical television special. It was a historical moment for co-producers Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, who already won the other three awards before this victory. The legendary singer was super-happy after sharing this honor with these two artists and expressed his delight in an Instagram post.

“Before tonight, only 12 people had won an Emmy, Grammy, Oscar, and Tony in competitive categories. Sirs Andrew Lloyd Webber, Tim Rice and I joined that group when we won an Emmy for our production of their legendary show Jesus Christ Superstar. So happy to be part of this team. So honored they trusted me to play Jesus Christ. So amazed to be in such rarefied air,“ wrote John Legend.

This iconic artist started his journey towards EGOT status in 2006. That was the year when he secured three Grammy wins, and he managed to collect seven more in the years to come. He won his Oscar in 2015, for writing the original song Glory for historical drama Selma. Legend received a Tony Award two years later, for co-producing Jitney for the Broadway stage.
