John Malkovich Joins Jude Law in HBO’s “The New Pope”

Out with The Young Pope, in with The New Pope. 

Despite previous announcements that there will be no second season, Variety reports that there will be a follow up to Paolo Sorrentino’s The Young Pope, called The New Pope. 

While storyline and character descriptions are scarce, it has been confined that John Malkovich is joining the cast for the return of the HBO limited series. 

Malkovich will star opposite Jude Law who starred in The Young Pope as Lenny Belardo, who took the name Pius XIII as he became the first American pope in history. Law received a Golden Globe nomination for his work on the show.

The script for The New Pope is being penned by Sorrentino, Umberto Contarello, and Stefano Bises, all of whom worked on The Young Pope. It is produced by Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani for Wildside and co-produced by Mediapro.

Production is scheduled to begin in Italy in November.
