It’s been a quarter of a century since the last time Johnny Depp set in the director’s chair, but he’s finally ready to go behind the camera. The Oscar-nominated actor will make his first directorial effort in 25 years with the upcoming biopic Modigliani.

This promising project is based on Dennis McIntyre’s play of the same name about the troubled life of Italian-born painter and sculptor Amedeo Modigliani. It will take place in 1916 Paris and show Modigliani navigating a turbulent and eventful 48 hours that will become a turning point in his life.

Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski adapted the play for the big screen. Depp is set to direct and produce the film alongside Al Pacino and Barry Navidi, and he couldn’t be happier about this creative endeavor.

“The saga of Mr. Modigliani’s life is one that I’m incredibly honored and truly humbled, to bring to the screen. It was a life of great hardship, but eventual triumph – a universally human story all viewers can identify with,” said Depp in a statement.

Modigliani will mark the actor’s first directorial effort since the 1997 western The Brave. Depp played the lead role in this project alongside Marlon Brando, but it’s still unclear if he’ll take a similar approach with Modigliani or stick to only directing it.
