Justine Triet’s “Anatomy of a Fall” Wins Big at 2023 European Film Awards

After winning the Palme d’Or at the Cannes Film Festival earlier this year, Anatomy of a Fall just dominated another major award ceremony. Justine Triet’s acclaimed drama swept this year’s European Film Awards, walking away with awards in four major categories, including the best European film.

Aki Kaurismäki’s Fallen Leaves, Jonathan Glazer’s The Zone of Interest, Agnieszka Holland’s Green Border, and Matteo Garrone’s Me Captain were also in the running for the best European film award, but Anatomy of a Fall defeated them all to win the biggest award of the night.

It also dominated three other major categories: best director (Triet), best screenplay (Triet and Arthur Harari), and best actress (Sandra Hüller). It was also a big night for the Danish superstar Mads Mikkelsen, who won the best actor award for The Promised Land.

Anatomy of a Fall has been either nominated or won the award for the best international feature at several ceremonies since the start of the award season, including the National Board of Review Awards and the British Independent Film Awards.

Unfortunately, Triet’s film won’t be able to replicate that same kind of success at the Academy Award because France has chosen The Taste of Things as their best international feature submission instead.
