Amiri Baraka’s Obie Award-winning play The Dutchman is getting its big-screen adaptation and its cast is shaping up to be amazing. André Holland, Kate Mara, Zazie Beetz, and Stephen McKinley Henderson will star in this promising psychological thriller.

The Dutchman is set on a New York train and it centers on a well-to-do Black man and an enchanting white woman, who find themselves caught in an intense game of cat and mouse that leads to a violent conclusion and amplifies the dimensions of racial conflict in America.

Andre Gaines co-wrote the script with Qasim Basir, and he’ll be in charge of directing the project, which will be shot live on a live MTA train in New York.

“This is a story that was near and dear to me, as I like to tell stories about historic times, places, people. I did that with my film The One and Only Dick Gregory; I also did that with a film called After Jackie and really wanted to elevate this story to bring it to new audiences and broaden its scope,” Gaines told Deadline.

The Dutchman is one of the latest films to land a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement in the face of the ongoing strikes, and it will start filming in New York later this month.
