Keira Knightley is no stranger to challenging roles, and her next project will see her tackling the true crime genre. She’s set to star in Boston Strangler, based on a true story of a series of murders that took Boston by storm during the early ’60s.

Written and directed by Matt Ruskin, this drama will center on Loretta McLaughlin, the first reporter to connect the murders and break the story of the Boston Strangler. Together with a fellow reporter Jean Cole, she challenged the sexism of the early ’60s and did everything in her power to put a stop to the most notorious serial killer that Boston had ever seen.

While researching the movie, Ruskin contacted the families of McLaughlin and Cole and used their actual research from the early ’60s. The subject matter hits close to home since he’s a Boston native, and the film is supposed to start shooting in the local area this December.

Knightley most recently appeared in period dramas The Aftermath and Misbehaviour. We’ll next see her in the Christmas-themed movie Silent Night, also starring Lily-Rose Depp, Annabelle Wallis, Kirby Howell-Baptiste, and Matthew Goode.
