It’s Kendrick Lamar’s world and we’re just living in it! His latest record DAMN. has beaten tough competition to win Album of the Year at this year’s BET Awards. He was also crowned the best male hip-hop artist by the end of the night.

Jamie Foxx did a great job hosting the awards ceremony which honors black excellence in the entertainment industry. He used the monologue to give a shootout to Marvel’s Black Panther and invited Michael B. Jordan to join him onstage and repeat his most iconic line from the movie. He later did the same with Donald Glover a.k.a. Childish Gambino, as a way of acknowledging his great talent.

Several artists who performed and accepted shiny statues at BET Awards used this opportunity to discuss important political issues. Kendrick Lamar did the same after picking up his Album of the Year award. Lamar invited his fellow artists to utilize their platform to send a message about the world we live in. Legendary singer Anita Baker received Lifetime Achievement Award during the ceremony and encouraged veterans in the industry to uplift younger artists who are still looking for their place in the sun.
