We’ve seen Kerry Washington portray many fierce and formidable characters, and she’s showing no signs of stopping. Her next project, Rockaway, will see her joining forces with Netflix and playing the role of an NYC journalist who finds empowerment through surfing.

This exciting project is based on Diane Cardwell’s memoir Rockaway: Surfing Headlong into a New Life and it will be scripted by Nichelle Tramble Spellman. Washington will serve as one of the producers through her company Simpson Street.

According to its official synopsis, Rockaway centers on a Manhattan journalist who unexpectedly discovers the transcendent power of surfing, while working on a routine assignment, and finds herself running from her comfortable life towards a life of romance and self-discovery in eclectic Rockaway Beach.

Rockaway won’t be Washington’s first collaboration with Netflix. She recently appeared in Ryan Murphy’s The Prom also starring Meryl Streep, James Corden, and Nicole Kidman. She’s also set to appear in the streamer’s young adult fantasy film The School for Good and Evil, based on Soman Chainani’s novel of the same name, with Paul Feig serving as the director.
