The cast for the highly anticipated sequel of Warner Bros. 2017 movie Wonder Woman is slowly shaping up. Director Patty Jenkins just announced that Saturday Night Live star Kristen Wiig is going to play villain Cheetah in Wonder Woman 2.

“So excited to confirm the most thrilling news!,” wrote Jenkins on her Twitter profile. “Yes! It’s true. So incredibly lucky to welcome the sensationally talented Kristen Wiig to our Wonder Woman family. Can’t wait to finally work with one of my favorites. “

Here is the Parry Jenkins’ full tweet.

According to the reports, Warner Bros. started talks with Kristen Wiig back in February. She will join Gael Gadot, who will return to play the titular character in Wonder Women 2 that will be reportedly set in the 1980s Cold War.

In DC Comics, Cheetah possesses superhuman speed, strength, and durability, alongside an enhanced sense of smell. The character is primarily known as a major adversary of Wonder Woman. There have been three different female incarnations of Cheetah since the character’s first appearance and it remains unclear which one will Wiig play. So far, the latest incarnation, archeologist Barbara Ann Minerva, seems as the most likely choice.

Wonder Woman premiered in May 2017 and received acclaims from the critics as well as performing extraordinarily at the box office, earning $821 million compared to $149 million. The movie was praised for its compelling story and action sequences, while the critics particularly highlighted acting performances from Gadot and Chris Pine.

After the success of the first movie, Warner Bros. announced a sequel at the 2017 San Diego Comic Con, confirming that both Patty Jenkins and Gael Gadot will return. Officially titled Wonder Woman 2, the sequel is scheduled for release on December 13, 2019.
