Kumail Nanjiani to Star as Chippendales Founder in “Immigrant”

Kumail Nanjiani is set to play Chippendales founder Somen “Steve” Banerjee in Hulu’s limited series Immigrant.

The eight-episode series will tell the true story of Chippendales’ founder Banerjee who introduced male exotic dancers at the Chippendales bar in West L.A., franchised the concept to multiple cities, and had troupes tour across the county. He was also indicted in a murder-for-hire plot in the 1987 killing of Chippendales choreographer Nick De Noia, and ended up pleading guilty to lesser charges before hanging himself in jail prior to sentencing.

The series is written by Robert Siegel and executive produced by Siegel, Nanjiani, Emily V. Gordon, Dylan Sellers, Chris Parker, Rajiv Joseph, and Mehar Sethi. Joseph and Sethi will also write on the series. Producing is 20th Television.

Nanjiani is known for starring in Silicon Valley and he appeared in Portlandia, Franklin & Bash, Adventure Time, and The Twilight Zone reboot. He’s set to appear in the Obi-Wan Kenobi series at Disney Plus. In regards to film, the actor has been in The Big Sick and will appear in Marvel’s Eternals.
