Like many films this year, Legally Blonde 3 will be postponing its release date and will debut on May 20, 2022.

Reese Witherspoon will be reprising her role as the iconic Elle Woods, sorority girl turned lawyer, for the third installment in the series.

Legally Blonde 3 was scheduled to air in February 2021, but due to the COVID 19 pandemic and movie theaters being closed, it was postponed.

The screenplay for the film was written by Mindy Kaling and Dan Goor (Brooklyn-Nine Nine and Parks and Recreation). A director has not been set yet and additional cast members haven’t been added. Plot details have also been under wraps.

Legally Blonde debuted in 2001 and instantly became a huge hit, earning $141 million at the box office. In addition to Reese Witherspoon, the cast included Luke Wilson, Selma Blair, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde was released in 2013 and it followed Elle to Washington D.C. as she fights to pass a law called Bruiser’s Bill, to stop makeup testing on animals. Although it didn’t fare well with critics, it grossed nearly $125 million globally.

The first film was turned into a Tony-nominated musical starring Laura Bell Bundy as Elle Woods and it ran on Broadway for a year.
