Lena Waithe will Receive Trailblazer Award at 2018 MTV Awards

MTV is slowly revealing winners for its awards ceremony. After it announced that Chris Pratt will be honored with Generation Award at the 2018 MTV Movie & TV Awards, the network revealed Trailblazer Award recipient on Monday. It is none other than Master of None writer Lena Waithe who will receive the honors reserved for “content creators that introduce new and unique voices within the entertainment industry.”

“Lena is shaking up Hollywood and breaking cultural boundaries through her innovative and authentic storytelling,” said Amy Doyle, general manager of MTV, VH1, and Logo, in a statement. “Her unwavering passion for equality and inclusion make her the perfect recipient for this year’s Trailblazer Award.”

Previous Trailblazer Award recipients include the likes of Emma Stone, Emma Watson, Channing Tatum, and Shailene Woodley. Lena Waithe will be presented with the award on June 18 when 2018 The MTV Movie & TV Awards are scheduled to take place at Barker Hanger, Los Angeles. This year’s ceremony will be hosted by Tiffany Haddish.

Lena Waithe started her writing career with crime procedural Bones, on which she served as a staff writer for 15 episodes. She received her major breakthrough while serving as a writer for Aziz Ansari’s starred Netflix comedy Master of None. Working on this series also brought her Primetime Emmy Award in category Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series. Waithe is also dedicated to her acting career, having starred as Denise in Master of None, P. Ninny in Dear White People, and most recently in Stephen Spielberg’s sci-fi adventure Ready Player One.
