Lewis Capaldi gave us one of the biggest sleeper hits of the year with his breakout single “Someone You Loved”. After months of steadily climbing up the Billboard Hot 100, this moving ballad finally reached the top and became his first no. 1 hit in the US.

Capaldi dethroned Lizzo, who spent seven weeks on the top spot with her empowering anthem “Truth Hurts”. It currently shares the title of the longest-leading rap song by a female artist on the chart with Iggy Azalea’s 2014 hit track “Fancy”.

“Someone You Loved” is Capaldi’s first song to ever enter the Billboard Hot 100 chart. It initially debuted at no. 85, and it took a total of 24 weeks for this moving track to reach the top. The song was originally released on November 8th, 2018 before being included on the singer’s debut album Divinely Uninspired to a Hellish Extent.

It took six months for Lewis Capaldi to finish this song that was completely forgotten after the singer recorded the verse on his phone. The open-ended lyrics of this track focus on letting go of a person who means a lot to you, while the music video centers on a widow coping with the death of his wife.
