Lovecraft Country won’t be returning for Season 2 at HBO.

“We will not be moving forward with a second season of Lovecraft Country,” HBO said in a statement as Variety reported. “We are grateful for the dedication and artistry of the gifted cast and crew, and to Misha Green, who crafted this groundbreaking series. And to the fans, thank you for joining us on this journey.”

The cancelation comes as a surprise as the show was a big hit for HBO. However, as the show is based on a novel, and unlike other HBO shows based on novels (most notable Big Little Lies), the team behind the show decided to not proceed with a second season.

The series, which is based on the novel of the same name by Matt Ruff, debuted in August 2020. The show followed 25-year-old Atticus Black (Jonathan Majors) who goes on a journey across 1950s Jim Crow America to find his missing father with his friend Letitia “Leti” Dandridge (Jurnee Smollett-Bell) and his Uncle George (Courtney B. Vance). During their travels, they have to deal with the racist terrors of white America as well as malevolent spirits.

Michael K. Williams, Aunjanue Ellis, Wunmi Mosaku, Abbey Lee, and Jamie Chung also starred in the series which was written and executive produced by Misha Green. Jordan Peele also executive produced with J.J. Abrams, David Knoller, Yann Demange, Daniel Sackheim, and Ben Stephenson.
