Biopics inspired by music legends are all the rage these days, but we’ll have to wait a little bit longer for Madonna to get her own. The biopic inspired by the Queen of Pop, set to star Julia Garner, has been scrapped by Universal Pictures.

Madonna herself was supposed to direct the film based on a script by Diablo Cody and Garner emerged as a front-runner for the role after a meticulous casting process. The actresses reportedly went through a ruthless boot camp that included testing on dancing and singing.

When Madonna announced this project back in 2020, she also revealed she’ll be the one directing it because she believes it’s essential to share the roller coaster ride of her life with her voice and vision

“I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer — a human being, trying to make her way in this world. There are so many untold and inspiring stories and who better to tell it than me,” the singer said in the statement.

Given how heavily Madonna would be involved in this project, many believe the biopic was canceled because she wants to focus her energy on the recently-announced Celebration Tour in honor of her 40th anniversary on the music scene.
