Mahershala Ali is always in the mood to commit to a truly challenging role, and he’s currently gearing up for another one. The two-time Oscar winner is set to star opposite Julia Roberts in the upcoming Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind.

Based on Rumaan Alam’s novel of the same name, this promising project will be directed by Mr. Robot creator Sam Esmail. The book explores how our closest bonds are reshaped and new ones are forged in moments of crisis by following the journey of two families forced together during a long weekend that goes terribly wrong.

When the project was first announced, Denzel Washington was set to star opposite Roberts before Ali took his place. Roberts is producing the film through her Red Om Films banner, and this will be her second collaboration with Esmail, who co-created the series Homecoming in which she starred in.

Leave the World Behind isn’t the only exciting project that Ali is currently attached to. The Oscar-winning star of Moonlight and Green Book is soon set to appear in Swan Song alongside Naomie Harris and Glenn Close, and he’s been cast as Blade in the upcoming Marvel movie about the iconic vampire hunter.
