Mamma Mia became one of the most beloved feel-good musicals of the 21st century and produced one sequel, but will there ever be a third? The star-studded cast of this franchise discussed the possibility of Mamma Mia 3 with Vogue and explained what it would take for them to come back.
Vogue recently published an interview with the masterminds behind this musical franchise, titled Thank You for the Music: An Oral History of Mamma Mia! Meryl Streep and Amanda Seyfried were among the cast members being interviewed, along with Christine Baranski, Stellan Skarsgård, Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, and Dominic Cooper.
Most cast members seemed to be excited about the possibility of coming back for another ride if the script was good enough. Streep said she would even return if her character was reincarnated or brought back as an evil twin, soap opera style!
At one point, Seyfried proclaimed, “I dare you to show me one person who doesn’t want a third Mamma Mia!”, while still staying realistic about the future of the franchise.
“Nobody is saying no, but nobody is saying yes either. The powers that be probably can’t afford us to be honest. I hate to say it, because would I do Mamma Mia 3 for free – of course I would—but that’s not the business we’re in,” said Seyfried.
Mamma Mia! and Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again are both jukebox musicals inspired by ABBA’s greatest hits, and they’ve grossed a joint total of over $1 billion globally.
