Disney is developing a female-fronted Pirates of the Caribbean movie, and they already found the perfect leading lady for this project. Margot Robbie is in talks to take the lead in this promising spin-off, written by Christina Hodson.

Hodson and Robbie already worked together on the stand-alone Harley Quinn movie Birds of Prey, which was well-received by the critics and became a VOD hit earlier this year.

Other than that, the project is still in early development, and plot details are being kept under wraps. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Robbie’s film won’t be connected to the long-running franchise about the eccentric, rum-loving pirate Jack Sparrow. It’s supposed to be an original story with new characters, inspired by Walt Disney’s theme park attraction.

The female-fronted spin-off will also have no connection to the Pirates of the Caribbean reboot announced a few months ago. This project is being developed by Ted Elliott and Craig Mazin, and it will be directed by Joachim Rønning, who helmed the latest installment, Dead Men Tell No Tales.
