Maria Bakalova got her big break with the Oscar-nominated role in Borat Subsequent Moviefilm, and it was just a matter of time before other exciting projects started coming her way. She’s recently been cast as the leading lady in the romantic comedy The Honeymoon.

Written and directed by Dean Craig, this rom-com centers on a couple getting ready to embark on a romantic honeymoon in Venice, but their perfect trip turns upside down after the groom’s needy best friend decides to crash their holiday.

Filming is underway in Rome and Venice, and Bakalova isn’t the only cast member to join the project. The cast will also include Pico Alexander (Home Again), Asim Chaudhry (People Just Do Nothing), and Lucas Bravo (Emily in Paris).

In an official statement announcing her involvement, Bakalova said that this project intrigued her “because it’s an escapist comedy that puts a twist on the classic buddy movie format by including a strong female character, particularly from Eastern Europe.” She also added she’s glad to star in the movie that will lift people’s spirits up, and also be a part of its production team.
