Martin Scorsese gave us one of the most intriguing psychological thrillers of the early ’90s with Cape Fear, and its TV adaptation is in development. Scorsese will produce this show alongside Steven Spielberg, with Nick Antosca serving as a showrunner.

The official synopsis describes this series as a “tense, contemporary thriller that examines America’s obsession with true crime in the 21st century.” It centers on a pair of married attorneys, who must face their past when an infamous killer gets released after years in prison.

Scorsese’s version of Cape Fear came out in 1991 and it starred Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, Jessica Lange, Joe Don Baker, and Juliette Lewis. It was based on John D. MacDonald’s book The Executioners and marked the second adaptation of this novel, following the 1962 film starring Gregory Peck and Robert Mitchum, who made cameos in Scorsese’s remake.

Not much is known about the Cape Fear TV adaptation at the moment, and it’s unclear if any of the original cast members will return. Nick Antosca (The Act) is coming on board as showrunner, creator, and one of the executive producers, alongside Steven Spielberg and Martin Scorsese. Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey from Amblin Television and Alex Hedlund from Eat the Cat will also serve as executive producers.
