Greta Gerwig’s Barbie starred many amazing actors as different versions of Ken, and Matt Bomer came really close to being one of them. He recalled auditioning for Barbie in a recent interview and revealed why he ultimately missed out on the opportunity to appear in this film.

2023 has been a pretty busy year for Bomer, who just recently appeared in the historical drama Fellow Travelers alongside Jonathan Bailey. He also plays a supporting role in the Leonard Bernstein biopic Meastro alongside Bradley Cooper and Carey Mulligan, which is hitting the theaters this week before heading to Netflix on December 20.

He recently set down with Vanity Fair to discuss his recent project and revealed that Greta Gerwig’s Barbie came really close to being one of them.

“I recorded [the audition] on my own, played a bunch of different Kens – and I dressed differently for all of them. I recorded the lines of the other person’s dialogue on my recorder and then gave myself space to respond,” said Bomer, before revealing she decided to walk away from this project because he didn’t want to spend extensive time away from his family.

Bomer isn’t the only notable actor who missed out on the opportunity to play one of the Kens. Bowen Yang (Saturday Night Live), Dan Levy (Schitt’s Creek), and Ben Platt (Dear Evan Hansen) also auditioned for the role but had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts.
