Matt Smith has some pressure on his shoulders — and it’s not just the weight of that crown…

Producers of The Crown have now issued an apology to stars, Claire Foy and Matt Smith, in light of the revelation that the Queen was being paid far less than the Prince.

It was claimed that the pay discrepancy had arisen as a result of Matt’s role as the 11th Doctor on Doctor Who, believing that he possessed more notoriety.

In a statement which referred to Claire and Matt as “brilliant actors and friends,” Left Bank Pictures states that they, as producers, “are responsible for budgets and salaries; the actors are not aware of who gets what, and cannot be held personally responsible for the pay of their colleagues.”

The statement continued: “We understand and appreciate the conversation which is rightly being played out across society and we are absolutely united with the fight for fair pay, free of gender bias, and for a re-balancing of the industry’s treatment of women, both those in front of the camera and for those behind the scenes.”

Someone else united in the fight for fair pay are 24,000 people who have signed a Care2 petition calling for Matt and Netflix to donate the difference in paychecks to the Time’s Up Legal Defence Fund.

Well, they say a Prince leads by example.
