The Big Bang Theory star Melissa Rauch will play the lead role in the upcoming reboot of NBC’s ’80s sitcom Night Court. Rauch will join John Larroquette, who is set to reprise his role as night court prosecutor Dan Fielding from the original.

The reboot, which just received a pilot order from NBC, will focus on Rauch’s character Judge Abby Stone. She follows the footsteps of her late father, Judge Harry Stone, and takes over the night shift at the arraignment court in Manhattan. Stone faces various challenges at her new job while also trying to bring order to the court’s “crew of oddballs and cynics.”

Rauch is credited for bringing Night Court back to television, pitching the idea for a reboot back in 2020 via her production company After January. Initially, she intended to serve just as an executive producer on the project but changed her mind after “falling in love with the incredible script from the brilliant mind of Dan Rubin.”

“I couldn’t be more thrilled to join forces with Dan, the immense talent that is John Larroquette,” Rauch added in a press release.

The original Night Court had a nine-season run from 1984 to 1992 at NBC. It revolved around young and unorthodox judge Harry T. Stone, portrayed by late Harry Anderson, who surprisingly gets the job of presiding the night shift at the Manhattan municipal court.

The sitcom recorded high ratings for the better part of its time on television while also receiving a number of awards. This included four Emmys for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Larroquette.
