Michael Caine made a name for himself as one of the most prolific actors of his generation, but he’s getting ready to wave Hollywood goodbye. The 90-year-old Oscar-winning actor announced he’ll retire after his last movie The Great Escaper because he wants to go out on a high.

Caine’s last film The Great Escaper will see him play a real-life war veteran Bernard Jordan who leaves his care home on the British south coast without telling anyone to attend the 70th anniversary of D-Day in Normandy. Caine told BBC that he’s been thinking about retiring for a while now, and he sees this movie as the perfect swan song.

“I’ve figured, I’ve had a picture where I’ve played the lead and had incredible reviews … What am I going to do that will beat this? The only parts I’m liable to get now are 90-year-old men. They’re not going to be the lead… So I thought, I might as well leave with all this,” he explained.

Caine’s career spans 77 years and over 170 film and TV credits, including two Academy Award-winning roles for the best supporting actor in Hannah and Her Sisters in 1986 and for The Cider House Rules in 1999. He’s also known as one of Christopher Nolan’s most frequent collaborators, and we’ve seen him star in his movies Inception, Interstellar, and The Dark Knight trilogy.
