Taika Waititi already has a bunch of intriguing projects in development, and he just added another one to the list. He’s set to direct the sports dramedy Next Goal Wins, with Michael Fassbender in the lead role.

This promising project is based on a 2014 documentary of the same name, directed by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison. It tells the underdog story of the American Samoa soccer team, that transformed from perennial losers to a FIFA World Cup-qualifying team with the help of their coach Thomas Rongen.

Fassbender is in final talks to play the role of Rongen, and the casting calls are out for Fa’afafine actors who will join him in the roles of team members. Waititi co-wrote the script with Iain Morris, with the original directors serving as producers alongside Jonathan Cavendish, Garrett Basch, and Andy Serkis.

Michael Fassbender recently reprised his role as Magneto in the latest The X-Men movie Dark Phoenix, and he’s next set to appear in Kung Fury 2 and The Wild Bunch.
