Michelle Williams brought dozens of amazing characters to life, and her next adventure is taking her to space. She will play astronaut Christa McAuliffe in the movie about the tragic Space Shuttle Challenger mission.

The Challenger will focus on the journey of a New Hampshire high school teacher to become a part of NASA’s Teacher in Space Project. After accomplishing this goal, McAuliffe joins the crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, but the mission goes awry. The shuttle exploded only 73 seconds after takeoff, resulting in the death of all seven crew members.

Martin Zandvliet, whose war drama Land of Mine received an Oscar nomination for the best foreign language film, will serve as the director. Ben Renzo will produce the movie through his company Argent Pictures. He believes Michelle Williams is the perfect person to embody McAuliffe’s strength, courage, experience, and humanity.

“The entire Argent team is honored and eager to responsibly capture and share the events and personal journeys of those surrounding this important historical moment with audiences around the world to help remember and further appreciate the sacrifices Christa and rest of the Challenger crew made to further our journey into space,” said Renzo.
