Michelle Williams and Oscar Issac are set to star in an HBO limited series adaptation based on Ingmar Bergman’s Scenes From a Marriage.

Bergman’s version debuted on television in Sweden in 1973 and consisted of six episodes. The new version will re-examine the show’s deposition of “love, hatred, desire, monogamy, marriage and divorce through the lens of a contemporary American couple.”

In addition to starring in the series, Williams and Issac will executive produce and Hagai Levi (The Affair) will write, direct, and executive produce. Also executive producing are Michael Ellenberg, Amy Herzog, Lars Blomgren, Daniel Bergman, and Blair Breard.

The former head of HBO, Ellenberg, has been working on adapting Scenes From a Marriage for years.

Williams became renown for her role in teen drama Dawson’s Creek and recently received an Emmy and Golden Globe for her role in the FX limited series Fosse/Verdon. Her film credits include Brokeback Mountain, Blue Valentine, My Week With Marilyn, Manchester by the Sea, The Greatest Showman, and Shutter Island. She won a Golden Globe for her role in My Week With Marilyn.

Issac won a Golden Globe for his role in the HBO limited series Show Me a Hero. His film roles include the Coen brothers’ Inside Llewyn Davis, Star Wars, Ex Machina, A Most Violent Year, Annihilation, and Drive. His next film roles will be in the reboot of Dune and The Card Counter.
