The cast of Top Gun 2 just got bigger and more exciting. Miles Teller, known for starring in movies like Only the Brave and Whiplash, landed the role of Goose’s son and Maverick’s (Tom Cruise) new protégé in the sequel of 1986’s Top Gun. First reported by Variety, the news was also confirmed by Paramount.

It was previously reported that Tom Cruise did some test shootings with Miles Teller, Nicholas Hoult, and Glen Powell in order to find the best fit for the role. Nick “Goose” Bradshaw, played by Anthony Edwards, was Maverick’s co-pilot and best friend. He died in the original movie.

Development of Top Gun 2 started in 2010, but due to various factors, it didn’t enter the production until 2017. Then in May 2017, Tom Cruise finally confirmed that the movie will start with the filming in 2018. The screenplay will be written by Peter Craig (The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 and 2), Justin Marks (The Jungle Book), Ashley Edward Miller (Thor) and Zack Stentz (X-Men: First Class). Joseph Kosinski, who previously worked with Miles Teller on Only the Brave, will take over the directorial duties.

Besides Teller, only other confirmed cast members are Tom Cruise reprising his role of Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and Val Kilmer returning as his old arch nemesis Tom “Iceman” Kazansky. The sequel should see Maverick acting as an instructor for a new class of fighter pilots. Top Gun 2 is scheduled for release on July 12, 2019.
