After less than a year of marriage, Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth split.

The two met in 2009 on the set of Nicholas Sparks’ romantic drama The Last Song. After years of an on-again, off-again relationship, Hemsworth proposed in 2012. They then ended their engagement and broke up a year later, but then reconciled in 2015 and were married on December 2018 in an intimate ceremony at their home in Franklin, Tennessee.

Rumors of a split began circling after Cyrus posted a photo of herself on Instagram without her wedding ring.

“Liam and Miley have agreed to separate at this time,” a rep for Cyrus tells PEOPLE in a statement. “Ever-evolving, changing as partners and individuals, they have decided this is what’s best while they both focus on themselves and careers. They still remain dedicated parents to all of their animals they share while lovingly taking this time apart. Please respect their process and privacy.”
