Miley Cyrus finally dropped her very first single of the year, and it was definitely worth the wait. “Midnight Sky” serves as the first single from her upcoming seventh studio album, and it was inspired by some of her biggest musical heroes.

The disco-inspired video was directed by Cyrus herself, and it shows her performing the song in numerous lavish outfits, including a black Chanel bodysuit and Swarovski gem-covered gloves. She changes several different settings throughout the video, ranging from colorful candy pit to glittery room filled with confetti, disco balls, and statues of jungle animals.

“Midnight Sky” is one of Cyrus’ most personal songs, and it was inspired by everything she went through in the last few years. She discussed its meaning in an interview with SiriusXM Hits 1, saying it provided her with a clear understanding of “some traumatic experiences” she faced.

“Midnight Sky” and its video were inspired by some of the singer’s biggest heroes, including Stevie Nicks, Joan Jett, and Debbie Harry. It even samples Nicks’ ”Edge of Seventeen”, and Cyrus personally reached out to the Fleetwood Mac singer to ask for her blessing to use it.
