It’s been a few years since Modern Family ended its run, and its star Julie Bowen is gearing up for her next big role. The Emmy-winning actress landed the lead role in Peacock’s upcoming coming-of-age thriller Hysteria!

Per its official logline, Hysteria! will take place during the “satanic panic” of the late 1980s, and focus on a struggling high school heavy metal band of outcasts, who decide to capitalize on the town’s sudden interest in the occult by becoming a satanic metal band. Their strategy eventually backfires, after a series of bizarre events leads directly back to them.

Bowen will take on the role of Linda Campbell, the mother of a teenage outcast, who’s forced to question everything she knows about her son after a series of supernatural disturbances in their small town.

Hysteria! will be written and executive produced by Matthew Scott Kane, while David A. Goodman will serve as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Jordan Vogt-Roberts is coming on board to direct the first episode.

Hysteria! marks the first major TV role for Bowen since Modern Family ended its run in 2020. She founded her own production company Bowen & Sons in 2021 and struck a first-look deal with Universal Television, in addition to starring in movies The Fallout and Mixtape.
