CBS announced the cancelation of Magnum P.I. back in May, but that wasn’t the end of the line for this hit action drama. Universal Television decided to shop the series around and found it a new home at NBC after the network agreed to give it a two-season order.

Universal TV had until July 30 to shop the series around before the cast’s deal expired, but they somehow managed to make it work. NBC agreed to renew the reboot of the iconic 80s drama starring Tom Selleck and order 20 new episodes, spread across two seasons.

The initial cancelation of the show was a huge blow for Hawaii’s film industry, leaving 350–400 people without work. The State Film Commissioner Donne Dawson said they’re deeply saddened by its cancelation, but also added that they’re appreciative that CBS invested in Hawaii during the show’s run.

Magnum P.I. premiered on CBS in 2018 and centered on an ex-Navy SEAL, who returns from Afghanistan and uses his military skills to become a private investigator in Hawaii.

Jay Hernandez plays the titular role, while the supporting cast includes Perdita Weeks, Zachary Knighton, Stephen Hill, Tim Kang, and Amy Hill. Eric Guggenheim serves as showrunner and one of the executive producers, along with Barbie Kligman, John Davis, Justin Lin, and John Fox.
