It’s been less than two months since 1899 premiered on Netflix, but the streamer won’t be bringing it back for another ride. Despite positive reviews, the mystery sci-fi series has been canceled after only one season.
1899 premiered on Netflix on November 17 and it centered on a group of European emigrants traveling from Southampton to New York at the turn of the 20th century. During their journey on a steamship named Kerberos, they encounter a nightmarish riddle aboard a second ship adrift on the open sea.
Co- showrunners Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar, who previously found great success with the Netflix series Dark, confirmed the show’s cancelation on Odar’s Instagram.
“With a heavy heart, we have to tell you that 1899 will not be renewed. We would have loved to finish this incredible journey with a 2nd and 3rd season as we did with Dark. But sometimes things don’t turn out the way you planned,” the duo wrote in a statement.
During its debut week on the platform, 1899 hit No. 2 on Netflix’s list of Top 10 TV English titles, with 79.27 million hours viewed in just three days, and stayed at No. 2 for two more weeks. Netflix didn’t cite the reason for the show’s cancelation, but it’s possible its budget was too high, since it went down in history as the most expensive German television series, with Netflix alone investing €48 million in the project.
