We can count on Jake Gyllenhaal to amp up the intensity in each new movie he stars in, and he’s taking things to a whole new level with The Guilty. The first trailer for this crime thriller is here, and tension is running so high that you could cut it with a knife.

The Guilty is based on the critically acclaimed Danish film of the same name, and it will see Gyllenhaal reuniting with the Southpaw director Antoine Fuqua. Its impressive cast also includes Ethan Hawke, Riley Keough, Christina Vidal, Paul Dano, and Peter Sarsgaard. Nic Pizzolatto, best known for creating the hit HBO series True Detective, was in charge of writing the script.

According to its official logline, The Guilty centers on a troubled police detective demoted to 911 operator duty, as he scrambles to save a distressed caller during a harrowing day of revelations and reckonings.

The Guilty is set to premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 11th, before heading to theaters on September 24th. It will have a limited theatrical release prior to streaming on Netflix, starting with October 1st.
