The Witcher is one of the most popular shows that Netflix gave us this year, and renewing it for another season simply wasn’t enough for this streaming giant that is also plotting a limited prequel series The Witcher: Blood Origin that takes place in the same universe.

Declan de Barra will serve as executive producer and showrunner of this series, which will explore the rise and fall of the Elven civilization and tell the tale of the very first Witcher.

“As a lifelong fan of fantasy, I am beyond excited to tell the story The Witcher: Blood Origin. A question has been burning in my mind ever since I first read The Witcher books—What was the Elven world really like before the cataclysmic arrival of the humans?” said de Barra in a statement.

The Witcher: Blood Origin will be a limited series consisting of six parts, and it will take place 1,200 years before the events of the original series. In addition to working on the second season of the Henry Cavill-starring show, Netflix is also plotting an animated spin-off film titled The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf.
