The Diplomat is one of Netflix’s most talked-about new shows right now and the streamer is betting big on its future. Less than two weeks after its premiere, Netflix renewed this political thriller series starring Keri Russell for its second season.

The Diplomat centers on Kate Wyler, the new United States ambassador to the United Kingdom, as she tries to defuse international crises and forge new alliances in London. In addition to Russell in the lead role, the series also stars Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Rory Kinnear, and Ato Essandoh.

Jinny Howe, vice president of drama series at Netflix, announced the show’s renewal for the second season, saying they can’t wait to see what the visionary team behind The Diplomat has in store for Season 2 after the jaw-dropping cliffhanger at the end of the first season.

Russell said she’s “thrilled to be headed back for another round of this smart screwball show.” The Diplomat creator Debora Cahn echoed her statement, adding it’s a thrill to see how much people are enjoying the series since they had such a great time making it.

The Diplomat premiered on April 20 and debuted atop Netflix’s weekly global Top 10 TV English list after being viewed for 57.48 million hours during its first weekend.
