The world’s leading music streaming service Spotify will serve as inspiration for Netflix’s new original series. According to multiple reports, the series will tell the story behind the creation and rise of Spotify while having a special focus on its founder Daniel Ek and his partners.

The six-part series already started production and is expected to arrive at some point in 2022. Vikings’ Edvin Endre is set to star as Ek, with Ulf Stenberg, Gizem Erdogan, Joel Lützow, and Christian Hillborg also a part of the cast. Per-Olav Sørensen (Quicksand) is set to direct from a script written by Christian Spurrier (The Fixer).

Netflix already confirmed the project by listing the yet-untitled series on its platform. The streamer didn’t provide further details besides a brief synopsis: “In this fictionalized account, tech entrepreneur Daniel Ek and his key partners revolutionize an industry by changing the way we all listen to music.”

Variety reports that the series will be based on Sven Carlsson and Jonas Leijonhufvud’s book Spotify Untold. The book follows Spotify’s challenging beginnings and covers multiple controversies and conflicts the streaming service had to overcome. Carlsson and Leijonhufvud previously revealed that they conducted more than 70 interviews in order to get the full story.

Founded in 2006, Spotify currently has 356 million active users on a monthly basis. The service has a free subscription that comes with commercials and paid subscription with no commercials and other perks.
