The search for the next Game of Thrones never stops and after The Witcher, Lord of the Rings and The Wheel of Time – which were already announced – the next candidate is Earthsea, based on the fantasy book series of author Ursula K. LeGuin.

Deadline reports that an adaptation for television is now in development by A24 and producer Jennifer Fox. This is the second TV adaptation of the series after a 2004 series on the Sci-Fi channel.

The first book of the series A Wizard of Earthsea was published in 1968 and told the story of a powerful wizard called Ged who accidentally unleashes a great evil across the land of Earthsea. LeGuin published four more books in the series, with the last one, The Other Wind, published in 2001. The author passed away in 2018 after she gave her agreement for another adaptation to Fox who optioned the books.

Fox stated that she treats the project as a secret trust given to her by the late author. “Ursula LeGuin is a literary legend with a huge fan base and her work has been translated into practically every written language on the globe”, stated Fox. “She is second only to Tolkien in influence in this genre and before she died last year, she agreed to put her most beloved work in my hands.”
