New “Dracula” Miniseries Finds its Lead

Actor Claes Bang (The Girl in the Spider’s Web) is Dracula.

The 51-year-old Danish actor and been announced as the titular vampire in the new and upcoming BBC and Netflix miniseries. The news that the miniseries, helmed by Sherlock writers and producers, Steven Moffat and Mark Gatiss, has found its lead was confirmed Wednesday.

“I am thrilled to be taking on the role of Dracula, especially when the script is in the hands of the incredible talents of Steven Moffat, Mark Gatiss and the team responsible for Sherlock,” said Bang, in a statement. “I’m so excited that I get to dig in to this iconic and super-interesting character. Yes, he’s evil, but there’s also so much more to him, he’s charismatic, intelligent, witty and sexy. I realize that there’s a lot to live up to with all the amazing people that have played him over the years, but I feel so privileged, to be taking on this incredible character.”

Moffat and Gatiss added in a statement of their own, “Tall, dark and gruesome all at once. Hell has a new boss.”

The show will be in similar format to Moffat and Gatiss’ modern-day take on the great detective. Three 90-minute installments have been ordered will tell the story of the infamous vampire, who travels from Transylvania to wreak havoc in London.

Dracula will air on the BBC in the UK and Netflix in the US.
