HBO Max is bringing the classic 80’s franchise back to life with an animated series—Gremlins: Secrets of the Mogwai. Now, it turns out the series will include some cameos from the original movie.

In a recent interview, the show’s executive producer, Tze Chun, told Geek Vibes Nation that “there is definitely going to be some exciting cameos from people. What has been really exciting is that Joe Dante is a consulting producer on the project. He looks at scripts, he looks at the artwork.”

“It’s been really amazing,” Chun added. “And I know that a lot of people on the crew and the writers are huge huge Gremlin fans. So it has been really great.”

The show is a sort of a prequel to the original movie. It takes place in the 1920s and follows 10-year-old Sam Wing (the grandfather in the original movie) who is taking care of Gizmo in China. The two of them will go on various adventures in what is described as a “very serialized show”.

“We definitely have a lot of Easter eggs and Gremlins mythology that hopefully will satisfy long term fans while also bringing in new fans,” said Chun.

The show is set to be released sometime next year.
