A new compilation of unreleased and rare material from arguably the best guitarist in the history of music, Jimi Hendrix, will be released on March 9 2018 via Sony’s Legacy Recordings. Titled Both Sides of the Sky, the album will feature 13 tracks recorded between 1968 and 1970, 10 of which are previously unreleased.
The compilation will contain Hendrix’ recordings with original line-up of Jimi Hendrix Experience, Band of Gypsys (Billy Cox and Buddy Miles) and jam sessions with guests including Stephen Stills, Johnny Winter, and Lonnie Youngblood. Both Sides of the Sky will be released in multiple formats including CD, and double vinyl.
This will be the third and final installment in the trilogy of Hendrix’ unissued archival recordings, previous ones being 2010’s Valleys of Neptune and 2013’s People, Hell, and Angels. Both previous releases charted in the top 5 of the US Billboard 200 charts. So far, there have been 11 Jimi Hendrix posthumously released albums.
One of the highlights of the album is the studio recording of Joni Mitchell’s “Woodstock” featuring Stephen Stills. Also, this will be the first time that jam between Hendrix and Johnny Winter on Guitar Slim’s “Things I Used to Do” is released in full. Previously, the version featuring Hendrix and Winter was featured in edited form on radio and box set Lifelines.
