Every actor has that one role that got away and Nicholas Hoult admitted he lost quite a few major parts just last year. The British actor revealed he almost starred in The Batman and Top Gun: Maverick, but ended up losing both of these potently career-changing roles.

Hoult is currently busy promoting the horror comedy Renfield and the upcoming third season of The Great, but his schedule would’ve probably looked different if he won some of the recent parts that he auditioned for.

“I screen-tested for The Batman and didn’t get it. Screen-tested for Top Gun, didn’t get it. Then I got the call from Tom Cruise: ‘Hey, how about Mission Impossible? ‘Ok. Got it. Then I had to drop out because I was already attached to do some more of The Great,” Hoult told The Guardian.

Despite losing the roles in some of the most acclaimed action movies in recent years, Hoult’s career is on the right track. He received Emmy and Golden Globe nods for his role in The Great, and his last film The Menu was embraced by critics and moviegoers alike.

Hoult will next be seen in Robert Eggers’s Nosferatu alongside Bill Skarsgård, Lily-Rose Depp, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and he’s also eying a role in Clint Eastwood’s Juror No. 2.
