Ever since Olivia Rodrigo dropped her smash hit “Drivers License”, all the signs were pointing toward its epic debut atop the Billboard Hot 100. After breaking several major streaming records, this viral song easily soared to no. 1 on this chart.
With 76.1 million U.S. streams during its first week on the Billboard Hot 100, “Drivers License” holds the record for most streams for a first promoted single by a female artist. And this isn’t the first major record it broke—Spotify crowned it as the fastest song to reach 100 million streams, shortly after it broke the record for most one-day streams for a non-holiday song on this platform.
There were several factors playing a role in Rodrigo’s overnight success. In addition to the behind-the-scenes drama connected to the singer’s private life, “Drivers License” also became the talk of the town thanks to many memes, TikTok challenges, and celebrity recommendations, but its heartbreaking lyrics sealed the deal.
“I wrote the bulk of the song literally crying in my living room, and I think that it definitely has that feel to it. It was really, really natural and organic. Very much me writing in the depth of my emotion. I think that’s really cool,” said Rodrigo during an interview with Apple Music’s Zane Lowe.
