Musicals inspired by our favorite 2000s movies are having a moment in Hollywood, and 13 Going on 30 is the next one in line. The stage reimagining of the beloved rom-com is in the works, and it hails from the film’s original writers Josh Goldsmith and Cathy Yuspa.
13 Going On 30: The Musical hails from Andy Fickman, who also directed the original adaptation of Heathers: The Musical, while Michael Weiner and Alan Zachary will write the lyrics. The stage adaptation will premiere next summer, and Goldsmith and Yuspa will hold a two-week workshop at the Battersea Arts Centre in London next month.
Goldsmith and Yuspa confirmed they’ll work on this project in a joint statement, saying they’re thrilled to bring it to the London stage after seeing the impact it had on popular culture.
“When we poured our middle school pain into the movie 13 Going on 30, we never quite imagined it would stick around to this day as a rom-com parents show their kids, a Halloween costume, a scene in an Ariana Grande music video, and a teen sleepover staple,” said the duo in joint statement.
13 Going on 30 starred Jennifer Garner as Jenna Rink, a 13-year-old girl who surprisingly wakes up as a 30-year-old woman after making a wish to skip the awkward phase of life. She must navigate her seemingly perfect life and reconcile with the person she has become. The film’s cast also included Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer, Andy Serkis, and Christa B. Allen as young Jenna.
