“Palm Springs”: Adam Samberg Lives the Same Day Over and Over Again

Adam Samberg and Cristin Milioti in "Palm Spring"

The existential rom-com that broke sundance film festivals has released its first trailer.

The film follows Nyles (Samberg) and made of honor Sarah (Cristin Milioti), who attend a wedding in Palm Springs, California, and after a one-time hookup, Nyles gets shot in the back with an arrow and falls upon a portal that sends him into an endless time loop, causing him to relive the wedding day over and over again with Sarah. The two decide to give in to the situation and they form a bond with each other.

“It’s one of those infinite time loop situations, you might have heard about,” Samberg’s character says in the trailer. “The second you fall asleep, it all just goes back to the start.”

Palm Springs will be released on Hulu on July 10. The film also stars Camila Mendes, Tyler Hoechlin, Peter Gallagher, J.K. Simmons, Meredith Hagner, and Chris Pang.

Max Barbakow the film’s director told Variety that Palm Springs isn’t like other romantic comedies, “We’re subverting a lot of the tropes you usually see in wedding movies and rom-coms,” Barbakow said. “Tonally, it’s that really nice charged area between laughter and deep feeling and then just bonkers stuff.”

The film was supposed to be released in theaters this summer, but due to the coronavirus, it’s going directly to streaming. At Sundance it broke records for the biggest sale in the festival’s history with Hulu paying $17.5 million for distribution rights.
